About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals that are performed by singers across the globe. His contributions to music education extend beyond composition; he has written widely adopted choral resources including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. A trained tenor and musical theater director, Beck brings theatrical sensibility to his choral writing.

Beck serves regularly as a guest conductor, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician for music educators and students throughout the United States and internationally. He has been commissioned by and conducted honor choirs across all age levels, including all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Ithaca College and a Master's degree in Music Education from Northwest Missouri State University, and has been an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992.

Why we love this

Beck's theater-trained sensibility makes this piece feel like a real showstopper, not just another holiday novelty. The list-song structure gives every singer something to sing about while keeping the energy high, and the built-in choreography opportunities mean your choirs have a clear visual path forward from day one. The recorded accompaniment and provided instrumental parts lower the rehearsal barrier significantly, letting you focus on fun rather than logistics.

What to expect

Bright, bouncy, and delightfully chaotic. The piece sparkles with the kind of orchestrated joy that makes holiday concerts feel like a party rather than a formal concert. There's a wink-and-nudge quality to the catalog of decorations, characters, and treats that keeps the tone lighthearted and fun, building toward a finale that practically demands a kickline.

Who it's for

This piece works for middle school and high school choirs that thrive on energy and spectacle. It's ideal for groups with enough singers to fill out SAB voicing comfortably and enough rehearsal time to learn choreography alongside the music. If your students love musical theater and your audience expects holiday concerts to be celebratory rather than reverent, this is your song.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the opening solo as a true moment of spotlight. Give that singer permission to own the stage before the group joins; it sets the theatrical tone for everything that follows.
  • Map out your choreography early, even if you only nail down the major moments first. The piece practically demands movement, so planning it during rehearsal frees singers to commit fully rather than second-guess their blocking.
  • Build momentum through the list sections by tightening entries and keeping tempo steady. Each new item should feel like it's piling on the holiday chaos, not dragging.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in early rehearsals to lock down parts and phrasing quickly, then rehearse with piano or a cappella to build ensemble independence and confidence.

How to use it

Open your holiday concert with this number to set a celebratory mood and signal to your audience that the evening will have heart and humor. It works equally well as a closing piece if you want to send singers and audience home riding high. The showstopper energy means it benefits from closing out a concert half rather than sitting in the middle of a longer program.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in SAB voicing with secure part independence
  • Responding to choreographed staging while maintaining vocal control and intonation
  • Executing clear, rhythmic articulation in a fast-paced, energetic style
  • Building confidence as soloists in an ensemble context
  • Interpreting musical theater style with appropriate phrasing and character
