About the Arranger: Jeff Funk

Jeff Funk

Jeff Funk published his first song at eighteen and has since become a prolific voice in choral music, with over 1.7 million copies of his works in circulation. A summa cum laude graduate of Millikin University (1993), he has composed and arranged hundreds of choral pieces across multiple genres and voicings.

Beyond music, Funk works as an assistant editor for Necro Publications and has ventured into fiction writing, with his debut short story appearing in a paperback anthology. He resides in Auburn, Indiana.

Why we love this

Funk's arrangement honors the contemplative power of this spiritual without overshadowing its essential message. The SSA voicing paired with his creative harmonic approach makes this accessible for developing choirs while offering enough musical substance to engage experienced singers and audiences alike.

What to expect

There is a quiet dignity to this setting. The arrangement respects the folk tradition while introducing harmonic color that deepens the emotional landscape, creating something that feels both familiar and newly discovered. Singers often find the text takes on new resonance when paired with Funk's thoughtful accompaniment.

Who it's for

This octavo suits choirs in grades 3 and up who have developed basic blend and intonation skills. It works equally well for festival performances, concert programs, or community choir settings where singers appreciate both accessibility and musical substance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Protect the integrity of the text by allowing natural phrasing to guide dynamics rather than forcing crescendos; let the weight of the words speak for themselves.
  • Balance the treble voices so the original melody remains audible even when Funk's inner harmonies thicken; resist the urge to let altos and second sopranos overshadow the line.
  • Approach the haunting passages with restraint and focus, letting silence between phrases breathe rather than rushing to fill every space with sound.

How to use it

Place this toward the end of a concert program where its reflective quality can provide a meaningful moment before the final piece or finale. It pairs naturally with other traditional spirituals or folk settings, or it can stand alone as a poignant bridge between more energetic selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing SSA voices while maintaining melodic clarity
  • Sustaining legit tone through emotionally weighted text
  • Interpreting arrangement choices that honor traditional material
