About the Authors
Nancy Bachus is a pianist, educator, and music historian who has established herself as a respected voice in piano pedagogy. An Eastman School of Music graduate, she studied under renowned pianists Eugene List and Brooks Smith, later receiving coaching from Fernando Laires. She has performed at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the White House, and appeared on multiple "Monster Concert" recordings that showcased elite musicians.
Her scholarly contributions span numerous publications in leading music journals including Clavier and Keyboard/Clavier Companion. She authored the widely praised Spirit anthologies (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Beyond the Romantic), developed the Exploring Piano Classics series, and co-authored Great Music & Musicians, a music history outline. Additionally, she wrote an 18-article series called "Athletes at the Keyboard" for Junior Keynotes magazine and served on the editorial board of The Piano Magazine.
As a Master Teacher certified by MTNA, Bachus brings over 27 years of experience teaching at the college and university level, including faculty positions at Cleveland State University and the National Music Camp at Interlochen. She has been a featured clinician at major piano teacher organizations and music conventions throughout her career. Bachus also served on the Board of Directors of the American Liszt Society and edited its newsletter for an extended period. She resides in Hudson, Ohio, where she maintained a private studio, and has two daughters.

Tom Gerou is a prolific composer and author whose creative output spans over 160 publications. His work encompasses reference materials like the Essential Dictionary of Music Notation and Essential Dictionary of Orchestration alongside pedagogical and popular works such as Premier Piano Course: Great Music & Musicians. His piano arrangements have become essential resources for music teachers, with pieces featured throughout Alfred's Basic Piano Library collections including Greatest Hits, Patriotic Solos, Popular Hits, Praise Hits, and Top Hits.
Gerou holds a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Southern California and a Master of Music degree in composition from Yale University. His accolades include two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards for best original theatrical music, a Morton Gould Young Composer Award, two Rena Greenwald Awards, and a Jimmy McHugh Composition Prize. Recent commissions have come from the North Dakota Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association Collaborative Commissioning Project.
