Karen Farnum Surmani

Karen Farnum Surmani holds the position of Early Childhood Acquisition Editor and Vocal Masterworks Editor at Alfred Music. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from California State University, Northridge, and completed a Master's degree in Music Education from the University of Southern California. Her teaching credentials include Orff certification and specialized training in early childhood and elementary music pedagogy.

Surmani has taught music across elementary, middle, and university settings and maintains an active career as a classical vocalist and private voice instructor. She has authored and co-authored numerous texts including Teach Yourself to Sing, Singing 101, and the widely used Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory series. She holds active memberships in the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, Music Educators National Conference, the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, Early Childhood Music and Movement Association, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
