About the Author: Karen Farnum Surmani

Karen Farnum Surmani holds positions as Early Childhood Acquisition Editor and Vocal Masterworks Editor at Alfred Music, bringing both administrative expertise and creative vision to music education publishing. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from California State University, Northridge, and a Master's in Music Education from the University of Southern California. Her teaching experience spans elementary through university levels, and she maintains active involvement in professional organizations including the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, MENC, the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Beyond her publishing work, Surmani is an Orff-certified music educator with specialized training in early childhood and elementary music pedagogy. She continues to perform as a classical vocalist and maintains a private voice studio. Her published works include Teach Yourself to Sing, Singing 101, Rock Singing Techniques, and co-authorship of multiple series including Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory and Classroom Music for Little Mozarts.
