About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, scholar, and educator whose prolific output shaped music education across multiple instruments. A child prodigy who performed on radio at age 13, he grounded his musical foundation in piano study under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique and improvisation proved formative to his career. His early years combined performance and study at Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi, where he regularly played accordion and piano on radio broadcasts and ensemble performances.
Palmer's compositional and pedagogical legacy encompasses 789 published works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of these publications have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His contributions to music education extended to the University of Houston, where he taught the first successful college accordion courses during an 18-year tenure. The Alfred Masterworks series, a highly acclaimed publication collection, emerged from his specialized research on Baroque music ornamentation, earning him recognition as a world authority in that field.
Palmer's scholarly achievements garnered significant honors, including a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. He served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained active membership in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Throughout his later years, he dedicated himself to research in Classical and Baroque music and teaching methods. Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. The company itself traces its origins to 1922, when his father Sam founded Manus Music in New York City's Tin Pan Alley as a popular sheet music publisher. In 1930, Sam merged his business with Alfred & Company, establishing the combined Alfred Music that continues operating today. Manus earned his business degree from City College of New York before joining the family enterprise in the late 1940s, where he also met his future wife Iris.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a traditional sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education powerhouse. His vision inspired the creation of instructional series covering accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, positioning the company as an industry leader in educational materials. The company expanded dramatically through the 1960s and 1970s, necessitating a 1975 relocation of headquarters to Los Angeles and the distribution center to upstate New York. A trained clarinetist and pianist himself, Manus guided these strategic developments while maintaining Alfred Music's commitment to quality instructional resources.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most recognized piano instructional series. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University, followed by a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same school. Her studies also included work at Juilliard under James Friskin, at Chicago Musical College with Rudolph Ganz, and at Columbia University with Douglas Moore. Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi honored her with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree.
