About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, her master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Her career includes faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, where she coordinated the class piano program and directed the preparatory program, as well as teaching appointments at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma. During the early 1980s, she served as an instructor at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Dr. Kowalchyk has presented at numerous national conferences and symposiums, including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
Working collaboratively with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored over 300 educational piano publications. Their most well-known works include Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, she maintained an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues to teach piano while serving as a clinician for Alfred Music.

E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor of Piano for Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he built the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy from the ground up in 1980. He mentored over 50 doctoral candidates in this field and directed the university's Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction for pre-college students. During his tenure there, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a substantial independent piano studio in Norman from 1981 to 1996.
Dr. Lancaster's leadership in music education includes roles as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as serving as National Conference Chair in 2020. He received major recognition at the University of Oklahoma, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996). Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia honored him with their Signature Sinfonian award in 2013, and Murray State University named him a Distinguished Alumnus in 2014.
