About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who composed nearly 800 published works spanning accordion methods, piano instructional books, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications have reached audiences across Germany, Japan, France, the Netherlands, and Spain. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical journey began as a child prodigy, performing piano on radio broadcasts at age 13. His formative study with pianist Mae Vardeman established his foundation in technique and improvisation skills. He continued his musical development at Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi, performing regularly on radio and in campus ensembles. Following his undergraduate degree, Palmer earned a prestigious two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany, then pursued post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he subsequently joined the faculty.
At the University of Houston, Palmer pioneered the first successful college-level accordion courses, teaching for 18 years. His later scholarly work focused intensely on Classical and Baroque music research and pedagogical methods, establishing him as a worldwide authority on Baroque ornamentation. This expertise formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological contributions. He directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local 65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who had founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company. A clarinetist and pianist himself, Manus held a business degree from City College of New York.
Under Manus's leadership in the 1950s, Alfred Music underwent a complete transformation. Rather than focusing solely on popular sheet music, he spearheaded the creation of instructional materials that became industry standards, including pioneering accordion instruction books followed by guitar, piano, and recorder methods. This strategic shift established Alfred Music as a leader in music education publishing.
The company's expansion reflected Manus's vision for growth and innovation. In 1975, Alfred relocated its headquarters from New York to Los Angeles while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York. His sons Ron and Steve joined the company in 1988 and 1992 respectively, and together they grew Alfred Music into a global enterprise with offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. In 2005, the company achieved a major milestone by acquiring Warner Bros. Publications, gaining control of the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the world-renowned piano method she developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. A Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, she earned degrees from Northwestern University including a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance. She also holds an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
Her training encompassed study with some of the twentieth century's most distinguished musicians: James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston. Beyond her foundational work with Alfred's Basic Piano Library, she collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano. Her recognition extends internationally, with listings in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
