About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was a distinguished musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and genres. Beginning as a child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he went on to study at prestigious institutions including the Conservatory of Leipzig on scholarship, as well as the University of Houston where he later became faculty.
Palmer authored 789 published works across accordion, piano, guitar, Hammond Chord Organ, and choral compositions. His publications have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. As an internationally recognized expert in Baroque music ornamentation, he became the scholarly foundation for the widely respected Alfred Masterworks series. His numerous honors included a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and a Doctor of Music degree (1983).
Beyond his compositional achievements, Palmer taught the first successful college accordion courses at the University of Houston for 18 years and served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston. He directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained active membership in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. He inherited the company from his father Sam Manus, who founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company to create Alfred Music. A skilled clarinetist and pianist himself, Morty brought both musical knowledge and business acumen to the role, having earned a degree in business from City College of New York.
Recognizing a gap in the market for quality music education materials, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a popular sheet music publisher into an educational powerhouse. Under his leadership, the company developed foundational instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that became industry standards. This strategic pivot established Alfred Music as a leader in music education publishing and set the stage for significant growth throughout the following decades.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano methods, which she developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. A highly trained musician, she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. She also completed advanced studies with renowned pedagogues including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her foundational work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, she collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano. Her contributions to music education have earned her recognition in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
