About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally respected musician, scholar, and educator who shaped music instruction through his prolific output of 789 published works. His compositional range spanned accordion methods, piano methods, organ instruction books, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of his works gained global reach through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For decades, he also served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical journey began remarkably early; he performed piano on radio broadcasts at just 13 years old. His foundational training under pianist Mae Vardeman emphasized both technical precision and improvisational freedom, establishing skills that would define his career. He further developed his talents at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, where he performed regularly on radio and in campus ensembles before earning his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps.
Advanced study at the Leipzig Conservatory on a prestigious two-year scholarship prepared him for post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he joined the faculty and pioneered the first successful college accordion courses for 18 years. Later, Palmer became renowned as a Baroque music authority, particularly regarding ornamentation practices. His scholarly contributions formed the foundation for the celebrated Alfred Masterworks series. The academic community recognized his accomplishments with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. He served as a director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus led Alfred Music Publishing as president from 1952 to 2016, steering the company through decades of growth and transformation. His father, Sam Manus, had founded the business in 1922 as a Tin Pan Alley sheet music publisher and later acquired Alfred & Company in 1930, merging the two operations. When Morty joined the company in the late 1940s following his business degree from City College of New York, he brought fresh vision to the family enterprise.
Under Morty's leadership, Alfred Music evolved far beyond its sheet music roots. As a clarinetist and pianist himself, he championed the development of instructional materials across multiple instruments, launching accordion books in the 1950s followed by guitar, piano, and recorder methods that became educational standards. The company's expansion was remarkable; it relocated its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 and established international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK while also acquiring Warner Bros. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco co-authored Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano methods, alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned three degrees from Northwestern University in piano performance and music education, and studied with distinguished faculty including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University. Her academic career culminated as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She collaborated with Dr. Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano and is recognized in the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
