Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific output shaped music instruction across multiple instruments. Over his distinguished career, he composed and published 789 works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, numerous solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of these publications reached audiences worldwide through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish.
Palmer's achievements earned him significant academic recognition and established him as a leading authority in his field. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983, honors reflecting his meticulous scholarship in Classical and Baroque music. His expertise in Baroque music ornamentation became foundational to the highly acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series, cementing his reputation as a world-class musicologist.
A gifted performer from childhood, Palmer displayed exceptional talent early on, playing piano on radio broadcasts at age 13. He studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique helped develop his improvisational abilities. His academic journey included studies at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, advanced training at the Conservatory of Leipzig on scholarship, and post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he later taught the first successful college accordion courses for 18 years. Beyond his academic roles, Palmer served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for more than six decades, from 1952 to 2016. A clarinetist and pianist, he transformed the company that his father Sam had founded in 1922 as Manus Music in New York's Tin Pan Alley. After acquiring Alfred & Company in 1930, Sam combined the names to create Alfred Music, the publishing house that continues today.
