About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who composed over 789 works across multiple genres and instruments. His prolific output included accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction books, Hammond Chord Organ materials, solo compositions, and choral pieces that reached audiences worldwide through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical foundation began remarkably early. At age 13, he performed piano on radio broadcasts and went on to study both piano and accordion under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique and improvisation fundamentals shaped his entire career. His formal education took him through Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi, where he performed regularly on local radio and in campus ensembles. Following his bachelor's degree, he earned a prestigious two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany before completing post-graduate work at the University of Houston.
As a faculty member at the University of Houston, Palmer pioneered the first successful college-level accordion courses, teaching for 18 years. He became a world authority on Baroque music ornamentation, and his scholarly expertise formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. His distinguished career earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. Palmer also served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who had founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. A trained clarinetist and pianist with a business degree from City College of New York, Morty joined the family enterprise in the late 1940s and fundamentally transformed its direction.
Under his leadership, Manus reimagined Alfred Music as an educational powerhouse rather than merely a sheet music publisher. During the 1950s, he spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that became foundational to music education. The company's expansion over the following decades prompted a major relocation in 1975, moving the main office to Los Angeles while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York.
Manus's sons Ron and Steve carried forward the family legacy by joining the company in 1988 and 1992, respectively. Together they extended Alfred Music's reach internationally with offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK, while continuing to develop leading instructional methods and performance materials. In 2005, the company made a significant acquisition of Warner Bros. Publications, gaining access to the EMI Catalogue Partnership and establishing a long-term relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the internationally recognized piano method created with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and brought extensive training from prestigious institutions to her work, having studied with renowned musicians including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education degree, and a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance, all from Northwestern University. She also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her co-authorship of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Dr. Lethco collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano.
As an active clinician and educator, Dr. Lethco conducted workshops and clinics across the United States and internationally, including engagements in Europe, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
