About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano lessons, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She directed the piano preparatory program and coordinated the class piano curriculum at Eastern Illinois, and spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at major conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored over 300 educational piano publications, notably Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 through 1996, serving students of all ages. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as both a piano instructor and clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He holds degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
Throughout his career at the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music who established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral students in this field while teaching piano pedagogy courses and overseeing the group piano program. His accolades from the university include the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). In 1991, he received the David Ross Boyd Professorship, honoring faculty who excel in teaching, counseling, and student guidance.
Beyond his university work, Dr. Lancaster directed a large independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma alongside his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, from 1981 to 1996, and instructed pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program. He has held significant leadership roles within MTNA, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano, National Chairman of Student Chapters, and 2020 National Conference Chair. His involvement with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy included chairing the Administration/Pedagogy Liaison Committee. In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia recognized him as a Signature Sinfonian for exemplifying high standards of excellence, and Murray State University presented him with their 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
