After Lesson Book D, the student may progress to Prep Course, Lesson Book E or choose to go directly into the faster paced Level 2 of Alfred's Basic Piano Library. The complete Prep Course consists of six books (Levels A through F).

About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was an internationally recognized musician, scholar, and educator whose prolific output shaped music instruction across multiple genres. Over his career, he composed and published 789 works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of his publications were translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence worldwide.
Palmer's path to prominence began as a child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13. He studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper piano technique enabled him to develop his improvisational skills. His college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College were marked by continued radio performances and ensemble work. Following his bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he earned a two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany. He completed post-graduate studies at the University of Houston and joined their faculty, where he taught the first successful college-level accordion courses for 18 years.
Palmer's later scholarly work focused on Classical and Baroque music and pedagogical methods, earning him international recognition as a leading authority on Baroque ornamentation. This expertise informed the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series of publications. In 1971 he received a Doctor of Humanities degree; in 1983 he was awarded a Doctor of Music degree. Beyond his teaching and research, Palmer served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and was active in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. He also directed the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas for many years.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He joined the company in the late 1940s following his graduation from City College of New York with a degree in business. A skilled clarinetist and pianist, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a traditional sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company.
During the 1950s, Manus spearheaded a complete reinvention of Alfred Music's product line. He developed instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, establishing the company as a leader in music education materials. Over the following decades, the company's rapid expansion required significant structural changes, including relocating its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 and opening international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
Manus's sons, Ron and Steve, carried forward the family legacy by joining the company in 1988 and 1992 respectively. Together, they continued expanding Alfred Music's catalog of instructional methods and performance music while strengthening its global presence. In 2005, the company achieved a major milestone by acquiring Warner Bros. Publications and the rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

Working alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus, she helped shape music education for generations of students. Her academic career culminated as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin.
Her educational credentials span some of America's finest institutions. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education from Northwestern University, followed by a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the same school. Columbia University, Juilliard, Chicago Musical College, and private study in Houston rounded out her training under distinguished teachers including Douglas Moore, James Friskin, and Rudolph Ganz. Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, honored her with a Doctor of Humanities degree.
Beyond her groundbreaking work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Dr. Lethco co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Palmer.
