About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific output shaped music instruction across multiple genres. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation under the mentorship of Mae Vardeman, whose rigorous piano training equipped him with both technical mastery and improvisational skills. His early years saw him performing accordion and piano across radio programs and campus ensembles during his studies at Whitworth College and Millsaps College.
Over his career, Palmer composed 789 published works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications reached global audiences through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Following graduate study at the Conservatory of Leipzig on scholarship and advanced work at the University of Houston, Palmer joined the university's music faculty, where he taught groundbreaking accordion courses for eighteen years. The Alfred Masterworks series, grounded in his scholarly expertise on Baroque ornamentation, earned international acclaim and established him as a leading authority in musicological research.
Palmer's contributions to music education and scholarship earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. He served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained long-standing involvement with professional organizations including the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. For many years, he also directed the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for nearly 65 years, from 1952 to 2016. He took over the company founded by his father Sam Manus in 1922, which had merged with Alfred & Company in 1930 to become Alfred Music. A trained clarinetist and pianist who earned his business degree from City College of New York, Morton joined the company in the late 1940s.
During the 1950s, Morton fundamentally transformed Alfred Music by recognizing the market demand for quality music education materials. He led the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, shifting the company from a traditional sheet music publisher into a leader in music education. Over the following decades, the company's growth necessitated relocating its main office to Los Angeles in 1975, with a distribution center established in upstate New York.
Morton's vision extended globally as his sons Ron and Steve joined the business in 1988 and 1992 respectively. Together, they expanded Alfred Music's international presence by opening offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. The company continued its expansion in 2005 when it acquired Warner Bros. Publications and the rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership, solidifying its relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.

As Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Lethco built an impressive career as both an educator and performer.
