About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who composed and arranged 789 published works spanning multiple genres and instruments. His prolific output included methods for piano, accordion, guitar, and Hammond Chord Organ, along with numerous solo pieces and choral compositions. Many of these works were translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence across the globe.
Palmer's scholarly expertise centered on Baroque music ornamentation, establishing him as a world authority in the field. His research formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series of publications. He earned a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological contributions. Additionally, Palmer taught the first successful college-level accordion courses at the University of Houston, a position he held for 18 years.
A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, Palmer studied at prestigious institutions including the Conservatory of Leipzig on a two-year scholarship and earned his bachelor's degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. His early training under pianist Mae Vardeman provided the foundational technique that enabled his lifelong work in improvisation and composition. Palmer served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and was affiliated with the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, while maintaining active membership in the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. He inherited the company from his father, Sam Manus, who founded it in 1922 as Manus Music and later merged it with Alfred & Company. Morton brought a business degree from City College of New York and extensive musical training as both clarinetist and pianist to his leadership role.
Under Morton's direction, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into a global leader in music education. He spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder starting in the 1950s. The company expanded dramatically over the following decades, necessitating a 1975 relocation of headquarters to Los Angeles and a distribution center move to upstate New York. In 2005, Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications, gaining rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

A Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, she brings decades of expertise to music education and performance.
Her academic credentials include degrees from Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, and Master of Music in Piano Performance) as well as an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She studied with renowned musicians including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University. Her published works also include Creating Music at the Piano, co-authored with Dr. Willard Palmer.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco has maintained an active presence as a clinician, workshop presenter, and recitalist across the United States and internationally. She conducted workshops and clinics throughout Europe, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
