About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as a globally respected musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and musical genres. A childhood prodigy who performed piano on radio at age thirteen, he built his musical foundation under the guidance of Mae Vardeman, whose teaching emphasized improvisation alongside rigorous technique. His early years included studies at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, where he performed accordion and piano on radio broadcasts and in campus ensembles before pursuing advanced training at the Conservatory of Leipzig, Germany on a prestigious two-year scholarship.
Palmer's creative output was staggering. He composed and published 789 works including accordion and guitar methods, multiple piano methods, a Hammond Chord Organ method, solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications reached audiences worldwide through translations in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. At the University of Houston, where he joined the music faculty after postgraduate work, Palmer created and taught the first successful college-level accordion courses for eighteen years.
His scholarly expertise in Baroque music and ornamentation earned him international recognition and served as the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in acknowledgment of his musicological contributions. He served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained long-standing memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. For many years, he also directed the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.

Morton Manus led Alfred Music Publishing as president from 1952 to 2016, steering the company his father Sam founded in 1922. Sam, a violinist who imported mood music for silent films, established Manus Music as a popular sheet music publisher in New York's Tin Pan Alley. In 1930, Sam merged his company with Alfred & Company, founded by Alfred Haase, creating the combined Alfred Music that exists today.
After earning a business degree from City College of New York, Morty joined Alfred Music in the late 1940s and eventually succeeded his father as president. He fundamentally transformed the company in the 1950s by developing instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, recognizing the market demand for quality music education materials. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known for co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano methods, alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and brought expertise developed through studies with distinguished musicians including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance, all from Northwestern University, as well as an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Dr. Lethco collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano and has been recognized in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
