About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar whose contributions span multiple instruments and musical disciplines. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age thirteen, he built his musical foundation through early study of piano and accordion under teacher Mae Vardeman, whose mentorship emphasized improvisation and solid technique.
Throughout his prolific career, Dr. Palmer created 789 published works ranging from instrumental methods for piano, guitar, and accordion to Hammond Chord Organ instruction books and numerous solo and choral compositions. His publications reached global audiences through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. He taught accordion at the University of Houston for eighteen years, establishing the first successful collegiate accordion program, and served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years.
His later scholarly work earned Dr. Palmer international recognition as an authority on Baroque music ornamentation. This expertise became foundational to the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series of publications. He pursued advanced study at the Conservatory of Leipzig on a two-year scholarship and completed post-graduate work at the University of Houston. His distinguished career was honored with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. A director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, Dr. Palmer held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company to create the modern Alfred Music. A skilled clarinetist and pianist, Morton held a business degree from City College of New York.
Under Morton's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. He pioneered the development of instructional series beginning with accordion methods, followed by influential materials for guitar, piano, and recorder. This strategic expansion established Alfred Music as an educational powerhouse and drove substantial company growth through the 1950s and beyond.
Recognizing the company's expanding scope, Morton oversaw a major relocation to Los Angeles in 1975 while maintaining distribution operations in upstate New York. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano method books, which she developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her degrees from Northwestern University, including a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance. Her advanced training came from prestigious institutions including Juilliard under James Friskin, Chicago Musical College with Rudolph Ganz, and Columbia University with Douglas Moore.
As Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Lethco established herself as a leading voice in music education. Beyond her groundbreaking method book, she co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer. Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi granted her an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in recognition of her contributions to music education.
