About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as a celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose influence spans multiple instruments and genres. Beginning as a child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation through piano study with Mae Vardeman and early accordion training. His collegiate years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College kept him active in radio performances and ensemble work before he earned his Bachelor's degree and pursued advanced study at the Conservatory of Leipzig, Germany on a prestigious scholarship.
Over his prolific career, Dr. Palmer authored 789 published compositions and instructional works across accordion, piano, guitar, Hammond Chord Organ, and choral music. Many of these pieces have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His expertise in Baroque music ornamentation became internationally recognized and formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. In 1971 and 1983, he received Doctor of Humanities and Doctor of Music degrees respectively in recognition of his scholarly contributions.
At the University of Houston, Dr. Palmer served on the music faculty and pioneered the first successful college accordion courses, teaching for 18 years. He directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Additionally, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for an extended period.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company to create Alfred Music. Manus held a business degree from City College of New York and brought fresh vision to the family enterprise.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education powerhouse. As both a clarinetist and pianist, he championed the creation of instructional materials across multiple instruments, including accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. The company's expansion during the 1950s and beyond established it as a leading force in music education publishing. Strategic growth led to the relocation of the main office to Los Angeles in 1975, with a distribution center established in upstate New York.
Manus's sons Ron and Steve continued the family legacy by joining the company in 1988 and 1992 respectively. Together they expanded Alfred Music's global reach by opening offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United Kingdom while maintaining focus on developing world-class instructional and performance materials. A major milestone came in 2005 when Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications, securing rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership and forging a significant relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano methods, which she developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her degrees from Northwestern University, including two Bachelor of Music degrees and a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance. Her training also encompassed study at prestigious institutions: Juilliard under James Friskin, Chicago Musical College with Rudolph Ganz, Columbia University with Douglas Moore, and private instruction in Houston with Ruth Barr.
As Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Lethco established herself as a leading figure in music education. She also co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer and received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
