About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as a globally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who shaped music instruction through his prolific output of 789 published works. His compositions and methods span accordion, piano, guitar, Hammond Chord Organ, and choral music, with many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, Palmer built his musical foundation studying piano with Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique enabled him to develop his improvisational gifts.
Palmer's academic career flourished at the University of Houston, where he taught pioneering college-level accordion courses for 18 years following post-graduate studies there. His scholarly pursuits focused on Classical and Baroque music, establishing him as an internationally recognized expert on Baroque ornamentation. This expertise directly informed the celebrated Alfred Masterworks series, demonstrating the practical application of his research to music education. His contributions earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983.
Beyond his teaching and writing, Palmer directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and served as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years. He held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local 65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, maintaining active engagement with the musical community throughout his career.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He joined the company in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York, working alongside his father Sam, who had founded the predecessor company Manus Music in 1922. A skilled clarinetist and pianist, Morton transformed Alfred Music during his leadership.
Under Morton's direction, Alfred Music evolved from a popular sheet music publisher into a major educational music company. Beginning in the 1950s, he championed the development of instructional materials, starting with an accordion series and expanding to include guitar, piano, and recorder methods that became industry standards. The company's success led to significant growth and expansion. In 1975, the headquarters relocated to Los Angeles with a distribution center established in upstate New York.

Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. She also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Dr. Lethco collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano.
