About the Composer: Willard A. Palmer
Dr. Willard A. Palmer built an extraordinary career as a composer, pedagogue, and musicological scholar. His output spans nearly 800 published works across multiple instruments and genres, from accordion and piano methods to solo pieces and choral arrangements, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Palmer's foundation was classical, he studied at the Conservatory of Leipzig on a two-year scholarship and later joined the University of Houston faculty, where he pioneered the first successful college accordion courses.
Palmer's later decades turned toward deep scholarly work in Baroque music and ornamentation, making him a recognized international authority in the field. This research directly shaped the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series and informed his pedagogical approach across all his method books. His contributions earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. Beyond his academic work, Palmer served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained a lifelong commitment to choral music as director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years.
