About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands out as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and genres. Beginning as a child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation studying with Mae Vardeman, whose mentorship in piano technique and improvisation shaped his artistic development.
Palmer's compositional and pedagogical output is extraordinary, comprising 789 published works across accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. He earned both a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and a Doctor of Music degree (1983) in recognition of his scholarly achievements.
Throughout his career, Palmer taught accordion at the University of Houston for 18 years, establishing the first successful college-level accordion courses. He directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and became a leading authority on Baroque music ornamentation, work that formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Additionally, Palmer served as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years and maintained active memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. throughout its major expansion, from 1952 to 2016. The company's roots trace back to 1922, when his father Sam Manus founded Manus Music in New York's Tin Pan Alley. After acquiring Alfred & Company in 1930, Sam combined the names to create Alfred Music. Morton joined the company in the late 1940s following his business degree from City College of New York and eventually succeeded his father as president.
A clarinetist and pianist, Morton fundamentally transformed Alfred Music during the 1950s by recognizing the market demand for educational materials. He directed the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, shifting the company beyond popular sheet music into music education leadership. Under his stewardship, Alfred Music relocated its main office to Los Angeles in 1975 and established distribution operations in upstate New York as the company outgrew its original New York headquarters.
Morton's sons Ron and Steve later joined the company in 1988 and 1992, respectively, continuing the family legacy. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the internationally celebrated piano method developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her Bachelor of Music degrees in both Piano Performance and Music Education from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. Her studies also included work with renowned pedagogues James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston.
At the University of Texas at Austin, she served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy, establishing herself as a leading voice in music education. Her contributions to the field earned her an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She also collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano.
