About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was an internationally acclaimed musician, educator, and scholar who created 789 published compositions spanning multiple genres and instruments. His works, which include piano and guitar methods, accordion instruction books, solo pieces, and choral arrangements, have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's extraordinary career began in childhood when he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13. He studied under pianist Mae Vardeman, who cultivated his improvisation skills through rigorous technique training. His college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi included regular radio performances and ensemble work. Following his bachelor's degree from Millsaps, Palmer earned a two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany and later completed post-graduate studies at the University of Houston.
As a faculty member at the University of Houston, Palmer pioneered the first successful collegiate accordion courses, teaching for 18 years. His meticulous scholarly research on Baroque music ornamentation became recognized worldwide and informed the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. The American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers all counted him among their members. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983, and he served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. He inherited a company founded by his father Sam in 1922, which had merged with Alfred & Company in 1930 to form what became one of the music industry's most influential publishers. A trained clarinetist and pianist with a business degree from City College of New York, Morton transformed the company's direction during his tenure.
Under Morton's leadership, Alfred Music shifted from primarily publishing popular sheet music to becoming a major force in music education. He championed the creation of instructional series that revolutionized how musicians learned, beginning with accordion methods and expanding to include guitar, piano, and recorder instruction books. This strategic pivot positioned Alfred Music as a global leader in educational materials and performance music throughout the late twentieth century.

His sons Ron and Steve joined the business in 1988 and 1992 respectively, continuing the family legacy while expanding Alfred Music's international presence through offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. In 2005, the company acquired Warner Bros. Publications, a milestone that secured rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership and established a significant relationship with Warner/Chappell Music. The company relocated its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 while expanding its distribution infrastructure.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is the co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the internationally recognized piano method created with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. Her advanced training included study at Juilliard with James Friskin, at Chicago Musical College with Rudolph Ganz, at Columbia University with Douglas Moore, and in Houston with Ruth Barr.
As Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Lethco established herself as a leading voice in music education. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and has been recognized in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
