About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally respected musician, educator, and scholar who created 789 published compositions. His prolific output spans accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction books, Hammond Chord Organ techniques, solo pieces, and choral works. Many of these compositions have been published in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish translations. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical foundation began remarkably early. At just 13 years old, he performed piano on radio broadcasts. His piano teacher, Mae Vardeman, provided rigorous technical training while cultivating his improvisational skills. He pursued higher education at Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he performed regularly on radio programs and in campus ensembles. Following his bachelor's degree from Millsaps, a two-year scholarship enabled him to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany.
At the University of Houston, Palmer taught groundbreaking accordion courses for 18 years and completed post-graduate work in music. His later career focused on scholarly research in Classical and Baroque music and pedagogical methods. Recognized globally for his expertise in Baroque ornamentation, his scholarship formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. He earned a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. Palmer held membership in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York. A accomplished clarinetist and pianist, Manus transformed the company his father Sam had founded into a major force in music publishing and education.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music evolved from a popular sheet music publisher into an educational powerhouse. In the 1950s, he spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that established the company as an industry leader. The company's significant growth over the following decades led to the relocation of its main office to Los Angeles in 1975, with a distribution center moving to upstate New York.
Manus's sons Ron and Steve joined Alfred Music in 1988 and 1992 respectively, continuing the family legacy. Together they expanded the company's international reach with offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. In 2005, Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Her educational credentials span some of America's finest institutions. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University, followed by a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same school. She also holds an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Her teachers included renowned pedagogues and composers such as James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Beyond her groundbreaking publications, Dr. Lethco maintained an active career as a recitalist and clinician. She performed recitals throughout the United States and led workshops at college and university campuses across the nation.
