About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who created nearly 789 published compositions. His prolific output spans accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction books, Hammond Chord Organ materials, solo pieces, and choral works. Many of his compositions have been published in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish translations. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's early talent emerged when he performed piano on radio broadcasts at just 13 years old. He studied piano with Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique helped him develop strong improvisation skills. During his college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi, he continued performing accordion and piano on radio programs and in campus ensembles. After earning his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he attended the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany on a two-year scholarship and later completed post-graduate studies at the University of Houston.
As a faculty member at the University of Houston, Palmer taught the first successful college accordion courses for 18 years. His scholarly expertise in Classical and Baroque music, particularly in ornamentation techniques, established him as a world authority in the field and became the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. The American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP recognized his contributions through membership. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983, and he served as a director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited a company founded by his father Sam in 1922 as Manus Music, which merged with Alfred & Company in 1930 to become Alfred Music. A clarinetist and pianist himself, Morty brought a fresh vision to the organization after earning his business degree from City College of New York.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into an educational powerhouse. Beginning in the 1950s, he spearheaded development of instructional materials starting with accordion books, followed by guitar, piano, and recorder methods. The company expanded dramatically through the following decades, eventually requiring relocation of its main offices to Los Angeles in 1975 and establishment of a distribution center in upstate New York.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known for co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus, a piano method recognized worldwide. She earned degrees from Northwestern University in piano performance, music education, and piano performance at the master's level. Her advanced studies included work at prestigious institutions: Juilliard under James Friskin, Chicago Musical College with Rudolph Ganz, Columbia University with Douglas Moore, and private instruction in Houston with Ruth Barr.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco held the position of Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, in recognition of her contributions to music education and performance. Additionally, she co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer.
