About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, completed a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy at Northwestern University, and received her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she directed the piano preparatory program and coordinated the class piano curriculum. She has also taught summer courses in class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, National Piano Teachers Institute, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
Dr. Kowalchyk has co-authored more than 300 educational piano publications with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, including the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts series. From 1981 to 1996, she maintained a private piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she works as a clinician for Alfred Music while continuing her teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and maintains an adjunct piano faculty position at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, completing his doctoral studies at Northwestern University.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Lancaster spent nearly two decades as Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, where he established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral candidates in this field while directing the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction for pre-college students. His contributions to the profession earned him multiple honors from the university, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), and the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), which recognizes faculty excellence in teaching and student mentorship. He also received the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award and the College of Fine Arts Outstanding Faculty Award, both in 1996.
Dr. Lancaster has held significant leadership roles within the music education community, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. He has contributed to the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy in administrative and liaison capacities. In 1991, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma. His sustained excellence was recognized when Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in 2013, and Murray State University awarded him the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2014.
