Description
Play Piano Now! is for busy adults whose practice time is limited, and for adults without previous musical training. It is a slower-paced method that uses the same conceptual core of our original Adult Piano Course, but with several very important added features: more gradual introduction of music fundamentals, more pages of reinforcement and a greater emphasis on sight-reading exercises, one of the most important skills needed to ensure long-term enjoyment of the piano. Includes specially marked written exercises that can be completed away from the keyboard. The comb binding creates a lay-flat book that is perfect for study and performance.

More about this title

About the Author: E. L. Lancaster

E. L. Lancaster

E. L. Lancaster brought decades of piano pedagogy expertise to Alfred Music, where he served as Executive Editor for Piano. His academic foundation includes degrees from Murray State University, the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. At the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, he held the rank of Professor of Music and established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy, mentoring more than 50 doctoral candidates in the field. He also directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, balancing group and private instruction with pre-college students, and co-founded an independent piano studio that operated for 15 years.

Lancaster's contributions to music education earned him recognition across multiple institutions and organizations. The University of Oklahoma honored him with the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), an Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), and a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), awarded to faculty who excel in teaching and student mentorship. He served as National Chairman of Group Piano and Student Chapters for MTNA and held leadership roles in the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. Murray State University presented him with its 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in 2013.

Why we love this

This method respects adult learners by moving deliberately through fundamentals without sacrificing engagement. The emphasis on sight-reading builds genuine independence and confidence, turning new players into musicians who can explore repertoire on their own. Comb binding that opens flat is a practical touch that shows the authors understand how adults actually practice and perform.

What to expect

Progress is steady and visible. The writing balances straightforward instruction with genuine pieces that feel rewarding to play, not like exercises in disguise. Learning happens incrementally, so you build genuine understanding rather than memorizing patterns.

Who it's for

Adult beginners with limited practice time and no prior musical training will find this course's gradual pace and reinforcement pages essential. Working professionals, retirees exploring piano for the first time, and anyone returning to music after a long break benefit from the method's focus on practical sight-reading skills that enable lifelong independent learning.

How to get the most out of it

  • Complete the keyboard-free written exercises on non-practice days to reinforce concepts without fatigue; this approach works well for adults managing busy schedules
  • Use the included CD to hear pieces before attempting them, which helps establish realistic expectations about tempo and phrasing
  • Spread new material across multiple practice sessions rather than cramming, allowing concepts to settle between days
  • Return to earlier pieces once you've moved forward; familiar material builds confidence and demonstrates your growing musicianship

How to use it

This course works best as the foundation for adult group piano classes where participants have varied starting points and limited practice availability. Its combination of written reinforcement and keyboard material makes it suitable for hybrid instruction, allowing some assignments to be completed outside the classroom while in-person time focuses on performance and feedback.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading treble clef notation across multiple octaves
  • Basic hand position and proper touch technique for sustained tone
  • Understanding major scales, key signatures, and harmonic progressions
  • Sight-reading fluency through consistent, progressive exercises
  • Coordination between hands at different tempos
  • Music theory fundamentals including intervals, rhythm notation, and time signatures
  • Pedal technique introduction and application
