About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse studied Music Education and Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he later received the Distinguished Alumni award. His career in music publishing included eight years as a rights and licenses administrator and a term on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America.

Althouse has composed over 800 choral works performed widely across the English-speaking world. Beyond composition, he has co-written children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, compiled vocal solo collections, and authored educational resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book, Accent on Composers, and classroom reproducible materials. He served on the board of the North Carolina Master Chorale and currently serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

Althouse brings the energy and rhythmic vitality of African musical traditions into a sacred context without sacrificing musical depth or harmonic sophistication. The combination of recorded accompaniment and available instrumental parts gives you flexibility to build arrangements that match your ensemble's instrumentation and rehearsal timeline.

What to expect

African Alleluia radiates joy and celebration. The piece carries both the spiritual weight of its text and the infectious, dance-like quality of African musical idioms, creating a performance experience that feels both reverent and vitally alive.

Who it's for

Choirs looking to program sacred music with cultural breadth and rhythmic energy will find this piece engaging across mid-level to advanced ensembles. It works equally well for concert settings, worship contexts, and programs celebrating global choral traditions.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic drive of the accompaniment recording. Let it establish the groove and momentum rather than fighting against it; your voices will sit naturally over a strong harmonic foundation.
  • Shape phrases around the natural speech rhythms of the text. African Alleluia thrives when singers connect each word to the pulse of the ensemble and accompaniment.
  • Balance ensemble blend with the distinctive character of the melody. This piece celebrates both the collective sound and the joy of individual voices contributing to something larger.
  • If adding instrumental parts, rehearse them in relationship to the recorded accompaniment first so musicians lock into the same groove your singers will use in performance.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a thematic anchor for programs exploring world music, sacred repertoire from diverse cultures, or contemporary choral compositions. Pair it with African American spirituals, Caribbean hymn arrangements, or other multicultural sacred pieces to build a coherent concert arc.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with rhythmic precision against syncopated accompaniments
  • Shaping melodic phrases within African musical idioms
  • Balancing harmonic blend while maintaining rhythmic independence
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment with musical flexibility
