More about this title

About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens

William Owens brings three decades of classroom experience to his compositional work. A graduate of VanderCook College of Music and a Distinguished Alumnus of that institution, he spent 30 years as a band director in Texas before retiring in 2014. His catalog exceeds 300 titles across concert band, string orchestra, and small ensemble repertoire, many of which have become standard teaching works across the country.

Owens has built his reputation on understanding what young musicians need: music that sounds substantial without overreaching their abilities. His work appears on festival and contest lists nationally and internationally, and he maintains active memberships in ASCAP, TMEA, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. He resides in Fort Worth, Texas.

Why we love this

Owens crafts Grade 1 overtures with genuine orchestration rather than simplification. Every section has something to play, and the snare drum choices (easy or advanced) let you match the part to your percussion student's current ability without compromising the sound. It's the kind of writing that makes a young band sound confident on stage.

What to expect

Affirmation radiates forward momentum and optimism. Sweeping melodic phrases unfold naturally while rich harmonic colors emerge from the band as a whole, creating an impression of vitality and purpose that energizes both players and listeners.

Who it's for

First-year and second-year concert bands ready for something with real compositional substance. The accessible Grade 1 level means newer players can succeed, but the orchestration and melodic writing keep experienced young musicians engaged.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the sweeping melodic lines by keeping the accompanimental voices from covering the primary melody. Young musicians naturally play softer than they think, so this usually requires conscious ensemble listening rather than constant conductor reminding.
  • Decide your snare drum approach before rehearsals begin. If you choose the advanced part, give that student extra prep time so they're secure by concert week.
  • The colorful percussion scoring is designed to sustain energy throughout the piece. Make sure your timpani and auxiliary players understand they're shaping the overall arc, not just filling gaps.

How to use it

Open a concert with this overture to set a confident tone for your band's performance. Its accessibility and engaging character make it ideal for festival or contest settings where you want to showcase solid musicianship without technical complications.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing melody and accompaniment within the ensemble texture
  • Sustaining phrase momentum across longer melodic lines
  • Ensemble blend and intonation in homophonic writing
  • Percussion coordination and part selection based on player ability
