Description
Baroque composer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) wrote incidental music for the play ABDELAZER, OR THE MOOR'S REVENGE by Aphra Behn in 1695. While the play, first performed on or before July 3, 1676, flopped, Purcell's incidental music proved more successful. The music consisted of ten movements, and it has been recorded numerous times. The second movement, Rondeau, is the most popular, and it was used as the theme for Benjamin Britten's THE YOUNG PERSON'S GUIDE TO THE ORCHESTRA in addition to other media such as television and video games. This modern edition for string orchestra and harpsichord was produced by Hilmar Höckner in 1926, and includes on the first nine instrumental movements, omitting the tenth, which was the only one to include a vocalist. A violin 3 part, transposed from the viola, is included. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (8.8.3-5.5.5 in set): Hpchd. Movements: 1. Overture (D minor); 2. Rondeau (D minor); 3. Air (D Major); 4. Air (G Major); 5. Minuet (G Major); 6. Air (G minor); 7. Jig (G minor); 8. Hornpipe 'Hole in the Wall' (B-flat Major); 9. Air (G minor). Reprint edition.

More about this title

About the Composer: Henry Purcell

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) stands as England's greatest Baroque composer and a pivotal figure in the development of English musical language. A master of both instrumental and vocal writing, Purcell served as organist at Westminster Abbey and composed prolifically across genres including operas, chamber music, and incidental theater works. His harmonic language combined Italian and French influences with distinctly English sensibilities, creating music of remarkable expressive range and structural sophistication that influenced composers for generations.

Purcell's theater music remains central to his legacy. Working during the Restoration period when London's theaters were reopening, he crafted incidental music that elevated the genre beyond mere accompaniment, creating orchestral movements worthy of concert performance. The Abdelazer suite exemplifies this achievement, demonstrating his gift for melody, rhythmic vitality, and orchestral color within the constraints of Baroque instrumental writing.

Why we love this

This suite offers string orchestras a direct path into Purcell's genius without requiring singers or soloists. The Rondeau's fame through Britten and popular culture gives students an immediate connection to the repertoire, while the remaining eight movements reveal the full scope of Purcell's theatrical imagination, from stately overture to rollicking jig. Höckner's 1926 edition has proven durable precisely because it balances authentic Baroque practice with practical string writing that engages student musicians rather than frustrating them.

What to expect

The Abdelazer suite pulses with theatrical energy and courtly elegance. Purcell moves fluidly between ceremonial grandeur (the Overture's grave opening), dance-like charm (the Minuet and Hornpipe), and genuine pathos (the minor-key airs), all within the tonal world of the Baroque string ensemble. The harpsichord grounds everything in period authenticity while the string lines sing with the directness and clarity that makes Purcell so appealing to modern ears.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the intermediate level and above will find this accessible yet rewarding. The suite works equally well for high school ensembles seeking authentic Baroque repertoire and college/community orchestras wanting to program substantial historical material. Musicians already familiar with the Rondeau through Britten's Young Person's Guide will appreciate discovering the complete theatrical context.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the harpsichord as a true ensemble member rather than relegating it to background filler; Purcell's continuo lines are compositionally significant and should articulate clearly beneath the strings.
  • Shape phrases through weight distribution rather than tempo modification; younger ensembles often rush the faster movements (Jig, Hornpipe) when what's needed is rhythmic control and articulation clarity.
  • Attend closely to the dance character of individual movements (Minuet in movement 5, Hornpipe in movement 8); their internal rhythmic profiles should guide your approach to phrasing and breathing.
  • Use the key changes as structural landmarks; moving from D minor through G major and back creates natural architectural divisions across the suite that help listeners track the journey.

How to use it

Program this suite as a stand-alone work celebrating English Baroque achievement, or pair it with music by Purcell's contemporaries (Lully, Blow) to frame a Restoration-era concert. The Rondeau's fame makes it an ideal teaching moment about how a single movement can transcend its source and achieve cultural permanence, while the complete suite demonstrates the depth composers invested in music written for theater rather than concert hall.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing Baroque articulation and bowing in scalar passages and dance rhythms
  • Balancing ensemble voices within transparent Baroque orchestration (3-4 independent string lines)
  • Coordinating with continuo accompaniment and following harpsichord realization in real time
  • Interpreting Baroque phrases across multiple cadential patterns and harmonic structures
  • Understanding dance character as a structural and expressive organizing principle
