Description
Baroque composer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) wrote incidental music for the play ABDELAZER, OR THE MOOR'S REVENGE by Aphra Behn in 1695. While the play, first performed on or before July 3, 1676, flopped, Purcell's incidental music proved more successful. The music consisted of ten movements, and it has been recorded numerous times. The second movement, Rondeau, is the most popular, and it was used as the theme for Benjamin Britten's THE YOUNG PERSON'S GUIDE TO THE ORCHESTRA in addition to other media such as television and video games. This modern edition for string orchestra and harpsichord was produced by Hilmar Höckner in 1926, and includes on the first nine instrumental movements, omitting the tenth, which was the only one to include a vocalist. A violin 3 part, transposed from the viola, is included. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (8.8.3-5.5.5 in set): Hpchd. Movements: 1. Overture (D minor); 2. Rondeau (D minor); 3. Air (D Major); 4. Air (G Major); 5. Minuet (G Major); 6. Air (G minor); 7. Jig (G minor); 8. Hornpipe 'Hole in the Wall' (B-flat Major); 9. Air (G minor). Reprint edition.

More about this title

About the Composer: Henry Purcell

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) stands as England's greatest Baroque composer and a towering figure in the history of English music. He composed prolifically across every genre available to him—sacred vocal music, secular songs, instrumental works, and incidental music for the theater—while serving as organist at Westminster Abbey and holding court appointments under Charles II and James II. His harmonic language combines the contrapuntal rigor of the Continental tradition with a distinctly English melodic sensibility, and his facility with word-painting in vocal music remains unsurpassed among his contemporaries.

Purcell's theatrical music was particularly celebrated during his lifetime. He wrote incidental music for nearly fifty plays, often composing multiple pieces that framed scenes, underscored dramatic moments, and provided entertainment between acts. The Abdelazer suite demonstrates his gift for crafting memorable, elegant instrumental movements that work both within dramatic context and as abstract musical forms. His influence on later English composers cannot be overstated; the Baroque tradition in England effectively ended with his sudden death at age thirty-six.

Why we love this

This suite sits in that rare space where every movement has genuine pedagogical and musical value. The nine pieces progress through accessible Baroque forms while introducing students to authentic harmonic language, dance rhythms, and the particular colors of string writing from this era. The Rondeau's fame means many ensemble members will recognize it, which builds engagement while you're teaching them to hear Purcell's voice more deeply across the other movements.

What to expect

Courtly and sophisticated, with an underlying sense of theatrical gesture. The music moves nimbly from dignified overture through intimate airs and confident dances, always maintaining a poised distance from Romantic sentiment. There's brightness in the major-key movements and a subtle melancholy in the minor-key pieces; taken together, the suite feels like a beautifully orchestrated conversation in an eighteenth-century drawing room.

Who it's for

String orchestras preparing repertoire that teaches Baroque style and harmonic practice without oversimplifying the musical content. Directors seeking nine short, varied movements can use as standalone pieces or as a complete performance unit—this flexibility makes it valuable for ensembles ranging from high school to community college level.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape each movement's opening phrase with a gentle dynamic swell; Purcell's melodies often gain buoyancy from carefully placed emphasis rather than sudden attacks.
  • Balance the harpsichord carefully so it supports harmonic structure without drowning string detail. In the Minuet and Hornpipe, the keyboard becomes almost melodic.
  • Observe the printed key signatures and accidentals precisely. The shifts from D minor to G major and the modal inflections in the Air movements rely on exact intonation to achieve their Baroque color.
  • Use the suite's progression through different metrical and emotional character to maintain ensemble focus across nine movements. The transition from Jig to Hornpipe to final Air provides natural energy shifts.

How to use it

The Rondeau alone justifies programming, especially for audiences who know it from Britten's Young Person's Guide. Program the complete suite as a single Baroque work, or select individual movements to anchor a concert exploring instrumental dance forms. The suite also works as a teaching concert where you explain each form to the audience before performing it.
