Douglas E. Wagner studied music at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees before spending three decades as a high school music director and administrator in the Midwest. Since transitioning to full-time composition in the 1970s, he has become one of the most prolific arrangers in American music education, with over 3,500 published works spanning concert band, choir, orchestra, handbell ensemble, and solo instruments.

Wagner's catalog has reached millions of performers and listeners worldwide, appearing on radio and television broadcasts and in concert halls across the United States and internationally. He continues to compose from his home in Indianapolis, Indiana.
