About the Composer: John Kinyon

John Kinyon

John Kinyon earned degrees from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, anchoring his training in both performance and pedagogy. He later received an honorary doctorate from Limestone College and spent decades as an instrumental music director, school music department head, and eventually professor of music education at the University of Miami before semi-retiring to North Carolina in 1982.

Kinyon has composed over 250 published works for Alfred, establishing himself as one of the most reliable voices in educational band repertoire. His output spans Grade 1 through Grade 3, encompassing original marches, ballads, overtures, and concert works that balance musical substance with technical accessibility.

Why we love this

Kinyon writes contest and festival pieces that actually sound like concert music, not just exercises dressed up as performances. A Suffolk Celebration delivers real melodic content and harmonic interest at Grade 2, proving that junior high bands can tackle serious repertoire without drowning in technical demands.

What to expect

Celebratory and approachable, with the kind of straightforward melodic character that makes young musicians feel like they're performing real music. The harmonic movement is clear enough to follow but colorful enough to hold interest.

Who it's for

Junior high concert bands preparing for contest or festival. The Grade 2 level accommodates groups with developing players while maintaining enough musical substance to engage serious young musicians.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody across sections; in Kinyon's writing, the principal line often moves between trumpets and clarinets, so coordinate entries to maintain phrase clarity.
  • Establish a steady harmonic foundation with the low brass and reeds before adding upper-voice ornamentation; this piece rewards clean chord changes.
  • Let the piece breathe at structural points; Kinyon typically marks these moments clearly, and respecting them prevents the work from feeling rushed.

How to use it

Program this as a festival or contest selection to showcase your band's musicality without sacrificing technical confidence. It pairs well alongside a march or lighter overture, giving your program shape and variety.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining phrase direction through harmonic changes
  • Balancing principal melodies across different instrumental sections
  • Reading clear structural markings and respecting musical phrasing at the concert level
