Description
These are fun (and challenging!) duets. The movements included in this suite are Magenta, Maroon, White, Red and Green, Red, White and Blue, Charcoal, Lilacs, Navy Blue and The Blue Sky Series. The White and the Red and Green are obviously Christmas based while the Red, White and Blue is an artistic rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner. Each of the duets is cleverly written and a joy to play in a concert situation or just in a private studio with students.

More about this title

Why we love this

Thrower treats the trumpet duet format as an opportunity for genuine musical writing rather than pedagogical busywork. Each movement has its own character and compositional voice, which means your students stay engaged across the entire suite instead of grinding through similar material. The balance between challenge and playability makes these pieces rewarding to prepare for festival or concert performance.

What to expect

A gallery walk through different musical moods and colors. Some movements land with festive brightness (the Christmas selections), others explore more sophisticated harmonic ground (Charcoal, Lilacs), and one reimagines a national anthem as something fresh rather than ceremonial. The writing maintains melodic interest throughout rather than relegating one player to a supporting role.

Who it's for

Advanced intermediate trumpeters ready for repertoire that demands both technical facility and musical maturity. This collection works well for studio teachers managing multiple students at similar levels or for ensembles preparing festival submissions.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the character of each movement separately during rehearsals. Magenta and Maroon demand different approaches from Lilacs and Navy Blue, so don't rush through the suite as a single unit.
  • The Star-Spangled Banner arrangement requires clarity on the second trumpet part; it supports rather than decorates the melody, so balance matters.
  • Mark breathing points together before performance. With two independent lines running throughout, coordinated breath management prevents ragged entrances.
  • Record yourselves playing each duet. Hearing the blend and balance of your two parts reveals intonation issues that stand out immediately in the duet texture.

How to use it

Slot individual movements into solo/duet competitions or spring concert programs where they serve as palate cleansers between larger ensemble works. The thematic grouping also makes this collection valuable for showcasing student progress across a full studio recital, with each duet demonstrating a different musical landscape.

Skills your students will build

  • Trading melodic lines between parts while maintaining ensemble balance
  • Executing characteristic articulation patterns across contrasting musical styles
  • Sustaining intonation accuracy in two-part texture without harmonic support
  • Responding to compositional context (festive, reflective, patriotic) with appropriate phrasing and dynamics
  • Managing independent rhythmic figures alongside a partner's line
