About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has composed over 100 choral works while serving as Director of Choirs at Rosemead High School in California, where she has taught since 2004. She holds degrees in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, along with her California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge.

Beyond the rehearsal room, Gray maintains an active life as a performer and educator, drawing inspiration from travel, reading, and time spent outdoors with her husband. Her prolific output reflects a deep commitment to making choral music accessible and engaging for student singers.

Why we love this

Gray writes spirituals with real harmonic substance and rhythmic character that feels natural for SSA voices rather than forced. The weaving of familiar carol fragments throughout creates moments of recognition that delight audiences while keeping the arrangement fresh and singable.

What to expect

Warm and celebratory, with the easy swing of a spiritual combined with the comfort of Christmas memories woven throughout. The piece radiates genuine joy without sacrificing musical sophistication.

Who it's for

SSA choirs seeking a Christmas program piece with genuine musical substance and accessibility. This works well for high school treble choirs and community groups that want something more inventive than traditional carol arrangements.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the syncopated rhythms with confidence; these stylistic elements are built into the piece, not extra flourishes. Lock them in during early rehearsals so singers can feel the gospel groove.
  • Balance the developed harmonies by having singers listen across parts, especially when familiar melodies appear. A quick harmonic analysis before rehearsal helps singers understand how the carols sit within the larger texture.
  • The recorded accompaniment is excellent for securing parts and letting singers hear how their section functions within the whole; use it strategically during independent rehearsals.
  • Shape phrase lines according to the spiritual tradition: aim for natural, singing phrasing rather than mechanical clarity, and let the joyful character breathe between sections.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece for a holiday concert's second half, where its energy and brightness can uplift an audience after quieter seasonal pieces. It pairs beautifully with more traditional carols and works equally well in mixed or single-gender settings.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing syncopated rhythms in gospel style
  • Balancing individual vocal lines with harmonic awareness
  • Interpreting familiar melodies within new harmonic contexts
  • Shaping sustained phrases with spiritual style and expression
