About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has built a reputation as a composer and conductor whose work reaches across orchestral, band, and chamber music with equal fluency. His compositions have been performed by ensembles ranging from professional symphony orchestras to school programs in venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House. He received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light. His music was featured in the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service.

As a guest conductor, Balmages regularly leads all-state ensembles, university orchestras, and professional groups worldwide, with notable appearances at the Midwest Clinic, College Band Directors Conference, and international conferences in Australia and Italy. He is currently Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic, and holds the James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts.
