About the Arranger: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray directs choirs at Rosemead High School in California, where she has shaped the choral program since 2004. She holds degrees in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, complemented by her California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray combines her deep training in composition with classroom experience. Beyond her work as composer, arranger, and choral director, she performs regularly and brings the same curiosity that fuels her musical interests to her life outside the rehearsal room.

Why we love this

Gray's arrangement captures the warmth and communal spirit of a traditional wassail without oversaturating the texture. The recorded accompaniment sits at just the right volume level to support your singers without overwhelming them, making this a genuinely singable option for holiday concerts.

What to expect

Honest and inviting, with the convivial spirit of voices gathering around a hearth. The traditional melody stays grounded while the arrangement adds just enough color to feel fresh without losing the carol's essential character.

Who it's for

This arrangement works well for mixed choirs of all levels, particularly those building a winter program or needing accessible seasonal material that doesn't require specialized vocal technique. High school and community choirs will find it especially useful for holiday concerts where singability and audience familiarity matter.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody across your ensemble so the familiar tune emerges clearly; this isn't a moment for complex voice-leading to steal focus from the song itself.
  • Layer in dynamics gradually as the arrangement builds, particularly through repeated sections, to maintain forward momentum without sounding mechanical.
  • Adjust the accompaniment volume during rehearsal so singers develop confidence in their own sound rather than leaning on the recording.
  • Treat the ending with care; many traditional carols falter in their final phrases when energy drops too soon.

How to use it

Pair this with one more formal or complex holiday selection to create balance in your winter concert; its straightforward charm serves as an excellent closer or opener. It's also an ideal choice for community or informal performances where singability and audience connection take priority over technical display.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with clear diction in a traditional song context
  • Blending and balance in a supported, unaccompanied-style arrangement
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment cues
  • Sustaining legit tone through repeated familiar phrases
