More about this title

About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and built her foundation through classical training and extensive choral accompanying at North Texas State University. Her compositions and arrangements now span choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice, with mentorship from Dove Award winner Mark Hayes shaping her artistic development in 2002 and 2004.

Courtney has established herself as a prolific composer and arranger, earning multiple ASCAP Plus Awards throughout her career. By 2009, she had published 100 titles; by 2017, she surpassed 350. She continues to compose full time while maintaining an active schedule of church music direction, piano instruction, and composition tutoring in Columbia, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Courtney brings a composer's understanding of voice leading and a pianist's sensitivity to accompaniment texture, which shows in the balance between choral independence and harmonic support. The blend of sacred, secular, and traditional elements gives you genuine flexibility in how you program this piece without sacrificing musical integrity.

What to expect

The piece carries the elegance of classical structure while remaining warm and communicative. Courtney's gift for melody and harmonic clarity creates music that feels both refined and immediate, never precious or overly complex.

Who it's for

This work suits choirs comfortable with SATB voicing who want a piece that bridges classical form and accessible contemporary choral writing. It's equally at home in a concert setting or festival competition, making it practical for groups balancing performance opportunities.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the recorded accompaniment with your choir's voice parts during initial rehearsals, then gradually reduce reliance on the track as ensemble confidence grows.
  • Pay attention to text declamation and ensure each voice section understands how their line fits the overall harmonic progression rather than singing mechanically.
  • Use the PartTrax download to create sectional rehearsal tracks if needed; many directors find isolating individual voice parts helpful for building independence in SATB texture.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece in a concert that mixes sacred and secular repertoire, or use it to fill a festival slot where judges value musicianship and clean writing. Its classical foundation also works well alongside contemporary pieces, lending program balance and stylistic variety.
