More about this title

About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and developed her compositional voice through rigorous classical training and years of accompanying choirs at North Texas State University. Her career spans five decades of writing for choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice, earning multiple ASCAP Plus Awards and mentorship from Dove Award winner Mark Hayes.

With over 350 published titles to her name since 2009, Courtney has established herself as a prolific and trusted voice in sacred and secular choral music. She continues to compose full time from Columbia, Tennessee, while maintaining an active teaching studio in piano and composition.

Why we love this

Courtney's classical grounding shows in the sophistication of her harmonic language and the care she takes with text setting. The recorded accompaniment captures the piece's elegant sensibility while remaining flexible enough for your rehearsal and performance needs.

What to expect

The music unfolds with the poise and restraint of a well-crafted art song, favoring lyrical expression over virtuosic display. Courtney's classical sensibility brings clarity and elegance to both sacred and secular texts.

Who it's for

SATB choirs with strong ensemble control and basic harmonic literacy. The piece works equally well for concert performances and festival competitions, making it a versatile choice for mixed ensembles seeking repertoire with classical credentials.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the soprano line; it carries the melodic gesture, but the inner voices contain important harmonic movement that should remain audible.
  • Use the recording to establish the proper stylistic approach, then encourage singers to phrase naturally rather than mechanically following the accompaniment.
  • Attend to vowel consistency across all four parts, especially in sustained sections where blend depends on unified resonance.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a centerpiece for a concert focused on sacred or secular classical traditions, or as a sophisticated opener that sets a refined tone for your program. It also programs well alongside other Courtney pieces if you're building a thematic set.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained, shaped phrases without breathiness or fatigue
  • Maintaining harmonic awareness while supporting the primary melody
  • Responding to subtle dynamic and tempo inflection in recorded accompaniments
  • Interpreting classical text-setting conventions
