Description
A collection of four joyful songs exploring the 'lighter' side of the Christmas. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was made famous by the 1944 film Meet Me in St. Louis, where it was sung by Judy Garland and this is complemented with O Christmas Tree, one of the most popular German traditional carols, and the original Another Christmas composed by series editor Alex L'Estrange and fellow composer Peter Gritton. A Christmas collection would not be complete without Jingle Bells, given a boisterous treatment here, although actually the song isn't about Christmas at all - it's about the cutter drag races in Boston, where young men would race sleighs to impress the girls!

Choral Basics is a recently created series that offers straightforward and rewarding repertoire for the beginner choir. Perfect for singers of all ages, the series offers simple 3-part choral arrangements for soprano, alto and a combined male voice part. Consultant editor Alex L'Estrange has brought together an array of repertoire including world music, spirituals, pop classics, show hits and original pieces. Carefully considered for the level, the arrangements pay particular attention to breathing, vocal ranges and technique whilst straightforward piano accompaniments support the vocal lines.

The series offers great value for money, as each volume comprises a set of contrasting songs for easy programming.

More about this title

About the Arranger: Alexander L'Estrange

Alexander L'Estrange is a composer and arranger whose work centers on making choral music accessible and engaging for singers at all levels. As consultant editor for the Choral Basics series, he has curated and created arrangements that prioritize clear vocal writing, thoughtful pedagogy, and genuine musical satisfaction. His approach reflects a deep understanding of what beginning ensembles need to sound and feel accomplished.

Why we love this

L'Estrange balances recognizable classics with freshly composed material, giving your singers a collection that feels both familiar and surprising. The arrangements respect the vocal capabilities of developing singers while avoiding the trap of oversimplification; each piece sounds genuinely musical, not watered down. With four contrasting songs in one book, you have immediate variety for a complete concert program without hunting for pairings.

What to expect

The book spans from tender and nostalgic to energetic and bright. You'll move between the wistful warmth of a classic film standard, the stately tradition of a beloved carol, the unbridled joy of a sleigh-racing romp, and the fresh originality of a contemporary composition. It feels like a complete Christmas package, not a patchwork.

Who it's for

This collection suits beginning choirs and developing mixed-voice ensembles seeking genuine repertoire rather than filler. It works equally well for school choirs, community ensembles, and youth singers who need straightforward voicing without sacrificing musical interest.

How to get the most out of it

  • Approach 'Jingle Bells' with rhythmic precision and ensemble energy. The boisterous treatment thrives on crisp attacks and clear articulation in the piano part, which will anchor the singers' enthusiasm.
  • Let the simplicity of 'O Christmas Tree' serve as your tuning anchor. German carols reward pure, sustained vowels and balanced part-writing; use this as a moment to reset blend and intonation before moving to more complex material.
  • Shape 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' with gentle legato phrasing. The song's emotional core comes through in breath placement and lyrical line rather than dramatic dynamics.
  • Support younger or less experienced singers in 'Another Christmas' by walking through the melodic contours slowly in rehearsal. An original piece may feel unfamiliar initially, but once they own the shape, it becomes rewarding to perform.

How to use it

Use this as your entire Christmas concert or winter assembly program. The four-song structure gives you natural variety in mood and energy without requiring additional arrangements or filler. The mix of familiar and original material also works well as a standalone set within a larger concert, providing contrast and preventing a purely 'standards' evening.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained legato phrasing in ballad-style songs
  • Rhythmic precision and articulation in uptempo material
  • Balanced three-part SAB voicing with attention to blend
  • Breathing technique and breath placement across longer phrases
  • Sight-reading confidence with a mix of familiar and unfamiliar melodies
