About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages composes across orchestral, band, and chamber idioms with equal fluency, and his works have graced stages from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. His honors include the A. Austin Harding Award, the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light, and membership in the American Bandmasters Association. He holds the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award and was commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for the inauguration of the institution's sixth president.

As a conductor, Balmages maintains regular engagements with all-state ensembles, university groups, and professional orchestras worldwide. His guest conducting credits span the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, and numerous national conferences. He currently serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.

Why we love this

Balmages builds tension with surgical precision here, then unleashes it completely. The pacing never telegraphs itself; what feels like a sprint is actually a carefully controlled arc that keeps both your ensemble and audience locked in from the opening moment through the final note.

What to expect

The first moments hang in the air, electric and still. Then the band explodes with undeniable force, never relenting, never looking back. It's the sonic equivalent of a held breath finally released.

Who it's for

Grade 2.5 bands seeking a concert finale with genuine edge and sophistication. Directors who want their students to experience what it means to build and release tension, and who value repertoire that respects young musicians' ability to execute demanding artistic concepts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Attack the opening silence as deliberately as you attack the first gesture. That stillness is part of the drama.
  • Balance the burst of energy against clarity; power and precision are not opposites in this context.
  • Map out breathing points in advance. The adrenaline will make tempos run away from you if you're not anchored.

How to use it

This is your closer, full stop. Place it as the final piece on any concert where you want to leave the audience breathless and your musicians feeling the collective power of what they've accomplished. Its intensity makes it ideal for festival or competition settings where impact matters.

Skills your students will build

  • Dynamic control across an extreme range (pppp to fff)
  • Ensemble precision in fast, densely-scored passages
  • Musical pacing and tension management
  • Breath control and stamina
  • Attack and articulation clarity under adrenaline
