More about this title

About the Composer: Joel Spineti

Joel Spineti

Joel Spineti brings seventeen years of classroom experience to his composition work, having shaped music programs at elementary, middle, and high school levels. He currently directs both the jazz and concert bands at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School in Connecticut, where his dual focus on classical and jazz traditions informs his compositional voice.

After earning degrees in music and education from Central Connecticut State University, where he studied composition with Dr. Phil Traegor, Spineti relocated to New York City to deepen his jazz piano training under Hal Galper. His twelve-year career in musical theater across forty states gave him an intuitive grasp of how music drives energy and narrative. Today he composes for concert band, jazz ensemble, choir, and theater, drawing on this rich background.

Why we love this

This score captures the kinetic rush of football without ever feeling forced or gimmicky. Spineti trusts driving rhythms and clear brass writing to do the heavy lifting, making it genuinely fun to conduct while remaining entirely musical. For Grade 2 programs looking for something with real personality and momentum, this sits in that sweet spot between accessibility and substance.

What to expect

The piece pulses with athletic momentum: crisp, propulsive rhythms anchor everything while brass cuts through with purpose and woodwinds add color and lift. It's the sonic equivalent of being in the stadium when something big is about to happen.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands with steady rhythmic control and players who respond well to energetic, sport-themed repertoire. This works particularly well for programs serving middle and early high school ensembles that benefit from music with clear narrative drive.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the driving rhythms locked and forward-moving; rushing slightly deadens the energy, while dragging kills it entirely.
  • Balance the melodic brass lines so they cut through without overwhelming the rhythmic foundation underneath.
  • Let the woodwind lines soar naturally; they'll sparkle more if you resist the urge to push them louder.

How to use it

Program this as a pacing change mid-concert to reset audience energy, or pair it with other light concert works to build a thematic program around American pastimes. It also lands naturally in a fall concert season when football is front-of-mind for your community.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining steady pulse and ensemble rhythmic precision through driving, repetitive figures
  • Balancing melodic prominence with rhythmic accompaniment texture
  • Executing clear articulation in rapid brass passages
  • Sustaining long woodwind lines with focused tone production
