About This Collection

Description

Suzuki supplementary materials for violin, cello, viola, and piano that extend and deepen student learning beyond the core method books. Joanne Martin's "I Can Read Music" series anchors this collection as a perennial bestseller for developing notation literacy, while Rick Mooney's position books for cello and Barbara Barber's solo collections provide performance material that meets contest and festival standards. With 267 titles spanning folk arrangements, ensemble pieces, and complementary technique work, you'll find resources that align with where your students are in the Suzuki progression.

Highlights

Teachers return repeatedly to Joanne Martin's "I Can Read Music, Volume 1: Violin Book" and Rick Mooney's "Position Pieces for Cello" series, both popular for their clear pedagogical design and student engagement. Barbara Barber's "Solos for Young Violinists" volumes provide performance material that works in studios and competition settings alike. Carey Cheney's cello solos round out the offerings with work specifically written for the Suzuki cellist.

Recently added

Helen Butterworth has published "Gems for Violin Ensembles 4" and "Gems for Violin Ensembles 5" in 2025, expanding options for group performance material.

Composer & Author Spotlight

Joanne Martin is a composer, teacher, and performer who has worked across North America and Europe as both a violist in orchestras like the Winnipeg Symphony and a chamber musician. With 76 titles in this collection, she brings deep experience as an educator. Her "I Can Read Music" series continues to be the standard tool for notation instruction across Suzuki studios.

Carey Cheney spent over 30 years performing and teaching cello to students at all levels, including 15 years in professional orchestras (Austin Symphony, Utah Symphony, others) and extensive work training Suzuki teachers since 2000. Her understanding of what cellists actually need shows in her solo writing and supplementary materials.

Barbara Barber's "Solos for Young Violinists" volumes are core purchases for violin teachers because they bridge the gap between method book work and meaningful solo repertoire. Her writing consistently serves both student motivation and festival requirements.
