About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck leads the choral publications division at Alfred Music and has established himself as one of the most widely performed contemporary choral composers, with over 450 works in active performance worldwide. His compositions span sacred and secular settings, children's musicals, and vocal pedagogy resources; he has also created foundational sight-singing and vocal technique curricula used in countless classrooms. Beyond the page, Beck is a sought-after guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician who has led honor choirs across the United States and served as commissioned composer for all-state and regional ensembles.
A trained tenor with degrees from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, Beck brings both scholarly rigor and practical performance experience to his work. He remains active as a singer and director, currently performing with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and maintaining his role as an Alfred studio vocalist since 1992. His commitment to choral literacy and artistry shapes every publication he creates and champions.
Why we love this
Beck's instinct for theatrical pacing transforms what could be a simple motivational text into a genuine concert moment. The way he engineers the shift from opening solo to ensemble entry, then layers three independent lines into luminous harmony, creates a dramatic arc that keeps audiences (and singers) engaged without requiring orchestral forces or complicated staging.
What to expect
Light emerges from shadow. A single voice holds darkness until the choir enters and begins to build warmth, then brilliance. The harmony deepens into richness, punctuated by moments of subtle dissonance that shimmer rather than jar, before one final explosive sonority cuts through silence like a flash.
Who it's for
This octavo suits concert choirs at the high school level and above, as well as community and collegiate ensembles seeking accessible yet sophisticated repertoire. The 2-part voicing makes it achievable for younger or less experienced singers, while the harmonic language and theatrical conception keep it engaging for advanced groups.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the opening solo carefully. This moment lives in stillness; a single voice in darkness sets the entire emotional foundation. Resist the urge to fill silence with vibrato. Let the sustained tone breathe.
- Manage the vowel blend when the three lines intertwine. Each part moves independently, yet the harmony must feel cohesive. Mark a vowel target for the unison portions and adjust slightly for the harmonic sections.
- Approach the final tone cluster as a deliberate gesture, not an accident. The dissonance is shimmering by design. Tune it intentionally with the ensemble, and sustain it with conviction until the conductor releases.
How to use it
Position this near the end of a concert to leave audiences with a message of hope and resilience. Its compact 12-page length makes it ideal for mixed-repertoire programs that move between styles, and its thematic focus on light and personal conviction pairs naturally with graduation ceremonies, peace-themed events, or brotherhood/solidarity programs.
Skills your students will build
