Description
This tremendously popular song was recorded early on by Al Jolson in 1913 and was later a hit for Judy Garland in 1937. Mark's smooth chart is set in a medium Basie swing style with lots of tutti ensemble playing. Great for teaching swing style, this easy chart also includes solos for trumpet and tenor sax.

More about this title

About the Artist: Joe McCarthy

Joe McCarthy

Joe McCarthy is a GRAMMY Award-winning drummer and bandleader whose career spans symphony orchestras, big bands, Afro-Cuban jazz, bebop, and beyond. Based in the Washington DC area, he founded and leads Afro Bop Alliance, an Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble whose recordings have earned Latin GRAMMY recognition and nominations at the 51st GRAMMY Awards.

Beyond his work as a performing and recording artist with musicians including Eddie Daniels, Poncho Sanchez, and Dave Samuels, McCarthy shapes the next generation of jazz musicians. He serves as leader of the United States Naval Academy Band's jazz ensemble, The Next Wave, and teaches drumset and Afro-Cuban percussion at both Georgetown University and George Mason University. His educational contributions extend to clinician work across the country and internationally, plus published writing on jazz and percussion for specialized publications and educational platforms.

Why we love this

Mark Taylor's arrangement captures the classic swagger of mid-century swing without burying the melody or the soloists. The tutti passages give your full ensemble something substantial to sink their teeth into, while the trumpet and tenor sax solos keep things fresh and provide natural spots for your best improvisers to shine. This Grade 2 chart respects the tune's pedigree while remaining genuinely accessible for younger ensembles.

What to expect

Smooth and confident. The tune glides with the kind of effortless sophistication that defined the Basie era, anchored by clean ensemble writing that feels both classical and swinging. Your students will recognize the underlying melody even as they're learning what it means to play with swing articulation and phrasing.

Who it's for

Directors programming for Grade 2 jazz ensembles who want a real standard with genuine historical weight, not a novelty chart. This works equally well for students encountering swing style for the first time and ensembles ready to deepen their groove vocabulary.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythm section into a relaxed swing pocket rather than pushing the tempo. The 'medium Basie swing' style only works when the groove feels inevitable, not rushed.
  • Balance the full ensemble passages so the ensemble reads as one voice. Use dynamics to shape the tutti figures rather than letting individual players dominate.
  • Give your soloists room to breathe and swing freely over the changes. Even if they're not yet advanced improvisers, they need permission to phrase behind and ahead of the beat.

How to use it

Pair this with other swing-era standards to build a concert around the golden age of American jazz. It also serves as an excellent teaching piece mid-season when your ensemble is ready to move beyond straight rhythm into authentic swing style. The accessibility of the Grade 2 part allows you to focus rehearsal time on swing interpretation rather than note-reading.

Skills your students will build

  • Swing articulation and phrasing (detached eighth notes, laid-back rhythmic placement)
  • Reading and responding to jazz ensemble voicings and tutti passages
  • Listening and responding to solo improvisation
  • Understanding groove-based ensemble cohesion versus vertical chord accuracy
