About the Composer: Heather Sorenson

Heather Sorenson

Heather Sorenson brings a rare fluency across both traditional and contemporary Christian music, a versatility that has made her voice distinctive in choral composition. Based in Dallas, she has built an international presence through performances in churches, schools, universities, and concert halls worldwide. Her recent commissions span institutions like Texas A&M University, the Kennedy Foundation, and Carnegie Hall, alongside countless works for churches and individual musicians.

Sorenson's background as a pianist runs deep throughout her compositional voice, and her teaching experience enriches every score she writes. She has taught elementary music, served as adjunct faculty at Baylor University, and continues to lead workshops and master classes across the country. When not composing or traveling as a guest artist and lecturer, she dedicates her time to benefit concerts supporting nonprofits close to her heart.

Why we love this

Sorenson understands how to craft moments that resonate spiritually without sacrificing musicianship. The text and music work in genuine partnership here, neither overwhelming the other, which makes this piece both meaningful to sing and accessible enough for most SATB choirs to bring off successfully.

What to expect

The music carries a sense of presence and immediacy, inviting singers and listeners into a quiet moment of reflection. Sorenson's harmonic language feels both rooted and contemporary, creating a space where faith and musicianship coexist naturally.

Who it's for

Choirs seeking repertoire that bridges spiritual depth with musical substance will find a strong match here. This octavo works for church choirs of intermediate skill and above, as well as school choirs with solid foundational technique and collaborative spirit.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the voices so the text remains clear; soprano and alto lines can easily overshadow the harmonic foundation if not carefully managed in rehearsal
  • Explore the emotional arc across all five pages rather than treating each phrase in isolation, building toward moments of intensity and releasing tension intentionally
  • Pay attention to any sustained harmonies by locking in voicing before adding text, ensuring intonation stays pure across longer passages

How to use it

Consider this for a worship service program where you want a text-driven moment that doesn't demand elaborate staging or accompaniment. It also pairs beautifully alongside instrumental offerings or as a centerpiece in a choral concert that explores themes of spiritual connection.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing multiple independent melodic lines within a unified harmonic structure
  • Interpreting text-driven phrasing in contemporary sacred music
  • Sustaining intonation through longer harmonic progressions
  • Collaborating across voice parts to achieve blend without sacrificing articulation
