About the Arranger: Gordon Goodwin

Gordon Goodwin began composing full orchestrations in his head at age five, and by thirteen had already written his first big band chart. His early gifts evolved into a multifaceted career spanning film scoring, television composition, and bandleading. His work has earned three Emmy Awards and multiple Grammy nominations, with orchestrations featured in films including Bad Boys II, Con Air, Remember the Titans, and Star Trek: Nemesis. He has written for and performed alongside artists such as Christina Aguilera, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and David Foster.
Since establishing Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band in 2000, he has positioned himself at the forefront of contemporary big band jazz. The ensemble's debut album made history as the first commercially available DVD audio release and earned two Grammy nominations. His subsequent recordings have continued to garner critical acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations, solidifying his reputation as one of today's most accomplished composers and arrangers working in large jazz ensemble writing.
Why we love this
This chart delivers the theatrical energy your ensemble needs for a memorable holiday concert while respecting the musicianship of an advanced group. Goodwin's trademark arranging voice shines through in the structural variety, moving from stately chorale textures to Basie-influenced swing to high-velocity bebop, which keeps both players and audience engaged without relying on novelty. The solo opportunities for five different voices (alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, and optional flute) ensure distributed spotlight moments while the ensemble section work remains driving and cohesive.
What to expect
A holiday evergreen reimagined through the lens of big band sophistication and bebop swagger. The piece opens with reverent stillness, unfolds into sophisticated swing grooves, then accelerates into Goodwin's signature high-energy writing that feels both playful and technically demanding.
Who it's for
Advanced jazz ensembles with mature section leaders capable of handling the solo demands and the rhythmic precision required at this level. Directors programming sophisticated holiday fare for audiences who expect contemporary arranging alongside traditional material will find this a natural fit.
How to get the most out of it
- The chorale section sets the tone for the entire piece; shape the voicing with warm, sustained tone and listen closely for harmonic blend before moving into the faster material.
- During the Basie swing section, lock the rhythm section into a relaxed half-time feel and have the ensemble settle into that pocket so the soloists have a stable platform.
- Bring the bebop passages into focus gradually rather than jumping abruptly; a slight ritardando into that section helps the transition land clearly.
- Balance the soprano double in the lead alto part carefully so it doesn't overshadow the section's blend; the optional writing should enhance texture, not overwhelm it.
How to use it
Slot this into the second half of a holiday concert, after a traditional chorale or chamber piece, to shift energy and showcase your ensemble's versatility and contemporary chops. Its five-and-a-half-minute duration makes it substantial enough to anchor a set without overwhelming the rest of your program.
Skills your students will build
- Controlling tempo and rhythmic precision across contrasting styles (chorale, swing, bebop)
- Voice leading and intonation in dense harmonic voicings
- Responding to sectional leadership and maintaining section blend while executing fast passagework
- Jazz soloing over changes with rhythmic accuracy and harmonic awareness
- Listening and adaptation when switching between laid-back swing and propulsive bebop textures
