His training in voice, organ, and composition at McKendree College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary informs both his administrative work overseeing six choirs, four handbell ensembles, and a 32-piece orchestra, and his prolific output of hymn tunes and sacred compositions. Several of his hymn settings appear in major denominational hymnals, including the Baptist Hymnal and Celebrating Grace Hymnal, many of them named after his wife and daughters.
