Why we love this

This method balances fundamental clarinet technique with genuine musical enjoyment through its integrated duet and solo repertoire. The inclusion of 24 duets teaches ensemble listening and intonation while 4 solos with piano accompaniment give students early experience performing with harmonic support, making daily practice feel purposeful rather than mechanical.

What to expect

Fresh and accessible. The duets create a sense of community and shared discovery, while the solos offer students moments of musical independence and pride. Rock-style accompaniments bring contemporary energy to traditional practice routines.

Who it's for

Beginning clarinet students starting private study or band instruction. This method works equally well for classroom band programs introducing the clarinet and for private studio teachers building foundational technique and musicianship from the outset.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the duets in pairs; having a peer or teacher partner helps students develop listening skills and accountability for rhythmic precision.
  • Use the optional rock-style accompaniment for solos and selected exercises to reinforce steady rhythm and boost student motivation during home practice.
  • Schedule piano-accompanied solos for studio recitals or informal classroom performances; these pieces provide a natural stepping stone toward more formal recital repertoire.

How to use it

Assign the solos and duets as performance opportunities in winter or spring recitals; they bridge the gap between technical exercise and real musical communication. Pair duets with ensemble classes to build reading fluency and peer collaboration early in a clarinet student's education.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading standard clarinet notation and fingering charts
  • Tone production and breath control across the clarinet's range
  • Basic articulation and legit playing
  • Rhythmic accuracy in simple and compound meters
  • Duet performance and listening for intonation and balance
  • Ensemble awareness and counting through rests and sustained notes
