Description

More about this title

About the Composer: Susanne Loeser

Susanne Loeser developed this collection from years of direct experience leading diverse percussion ensembles in music school settings. Her work reflects a deep understanding of how students at different skill levels can make music together without compromising musicality or engagement.

Loeser's approach prioritizes accessibility without sacrificing stylistic range. By grounding her writing in the instruments and resources already available in most school programs, she made ensemble percussion education genuinely practical for directors managing mixed-ability groups.

Why we love this

The real innovation here is the compositional approach: pieces that genuinely work for heterogeneous groups where beginners and advanced players perform the same piece simultaneously. Rather than dumbing down arrangements or relegating less experienced students to token parts, Loeser built complementary rhythmic lines that give everyone meaningful material. The stylistic breadth (pop, Latin, drum and bass, and more) means students experience real grooves, not watered-down approximations.

What to expect

These grooves have energy and contemporary relevance. You'll hear the influence of current popular music and world rhythms, not dated educational material. There's a playfulness to the writing that keeps students engaged while building serious rhythmic literacy.

Who it's for

Music school percussion teachers working with mixed-ability ensemble classes, and drumset instructors who need repertoire that doesn't force them to create separate arrangements for different skill levels. Percussion directors preparing students for performances, recitals, and competitions will find genuine performance-ready pieces here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the demo tracks on the included MP3 CD to establish the groove character in your mind before rehearsal. Students benefit enormously from hearing what they're building toward.
  • Use the minus-one recordings strategically during sectional work. Have advanced players drop out while beginners solidify their parts, then layer everyone back in for the full effect.
  • Map out which percussion instruments your ensemble has available before assigning parts. Loeser designed this specifically around standard school percussion equipment, but confirm your kit matches.
  • When introducing a new piece, highlight the groove pocket rather than getting lost in notation. These are rhythm-based works, so oral transmission and ear training matter as much as reading.

How to use it

Build a full percussion ensemble concert around selections from this collection, letting the stylistic variety sustain audience interest across a full program. Alternatively, slot individual pieces into larger concerts as percussion interludes or feature items. The performance-ready quality makes these ideal for showcasing your percussion program to parents and community.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing rhythms across multiple percussion instruments simultaneously
  • Maintaining steady grooves in pop, Latin, and electronic music styles
  • Listening and blending in ensemble settings with mixed skill levels
  • Coordinating independent rhythmic lines within a unified tempo
  • Building comfort with non-pitched percussion instruments (shakers, cowbells, woodblocks, etc.)
  • Understanding basic drum and bass, Latin, and contemporary pop rhythmic structures
